Breast light is an easy screening tool to detect breast vascularities. Breast Light C-infra is a non-invasive instrument to trans-illuminate the breast with harmless visible red light of a particular wavelength that is absorbed by hemoglobin. The areas of high vascularity (such as malignant tumors) would appear black whereas benign tumors would appear red as a result of trans-illumination in a dark room. Breast trans-illumination, being a harmless procedure, can be repeated as often as required and is especially useful for candidates in high risk category and candidates not suitable for other modalities of screening. C infra can prove to be an excellent adjunct tool for immediate evaluation by a qualified physician for various abnormalities within the breast.
The principal aim of early breast cancer detection is to identify the disease at a more curable stage and thus improve the prognosis and other vital clinical outcomes. Currently breast cancer detection is a three pan procedure. The first part is identification of abnormality in the breast tissue; second the abnormality is diagnosed as malignant or benign condition and third is the staging. It is evident that currently the front line strategy for the first part is either cbe or mammogram. Use to trans illumination on neo nat chest cavity for detection of Pneumothorax(PT) and Pneumomediastina(PM) dates back to almost 1975 and earlier. The requirement of extremely bright as well as 'cold' light made the equipment expensive because of fiber optic probe requirement. But now with the advent of appropriate LED's, it can become a valuable tool at an affordable price. Transillumination test is regularly being used in neo-natology to detect hydrocele, hydrocephalus, pneumoperitonium and pneumothorax. In addition, it can be used for differentiating between meningocele and myelomeningocele.
Pneumothorax (PT) is the most important condition discoverable by trans-illumination of neo-natal chest, particularly when weight is less than 4Kg. Pneumothorax is reported as 1-2% and over 40% in presence of respiratory distress syndrome. Mortality rates have varied from 20 to 38% in ventilated neonates. Also it has been found by post mortem injection that 10 ml of air in pleural space of a 1300 gm new born can be plainly seen by transillumination. Transillumination can aid in early diagnosis and treatment to prevent morbidity associated with this potentially fatal complication.
